Occupied and utilized by Mohawk people since time immemorial, Akwesasne was permanently settled in the 1750s along the 45th parallel that serves as the international border between Canada and the United States. Further intersected by state and provincial boundaries, the modern-day community of Akwesasne, which roughly translates to “land where the partridge drums,” is governed by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council (southern portion) and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (northern portion); who are responsible for government-to-government relationships and the overall wellbeing of 16,000 residents.
Mohawk Networks, LLC, is the tribally-owned broadband provider that connects our homes, businesses and anchor institutions via Fiber to the Home and Fixed Wireless infrastructure.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribally-owned enterprise, Mohawk Networks, LLC, launched in 2015 after the Tribe's completion of a $15 million broadband project that laid sixty-eight miles of fiber and connected hundreds of Akwesasne residents, businesses and anchor institutions to reliable, cost-effective broadband, voice and video services. Mohawk Networks, LLC is more than just broadband, by offering solutions that businesses need to use their internet connection effectively and reduce traditional telephone costs. In the Spring of 2021, Mohawk Networks received 8(a) certification from the Small Business Administration.
